28-06-06 Surprise function to honour Barry Walsh and Seamus Griffith
The Raheny Business Association in conjunction with the Federation of Raheny Residents (FORR) held a surprise party for Seamus Griffith (Grocer) and Barry Walsh (Postmaster) on Thursday evening in the lovely surroundings of St. Annes Golf Club on Bull Island.
In the course of the last year these two people, synonymous with Raheny Business for many decades, retired and wound up/ passed on their business quietly and with little fuss. They have both contributed enormously to the growth of Raheny as a healthy Commercial area that somehow manages to retain its Village atmosphere and Community-based appeal.
Both were in on the foundation of the Raheny Business Association 18 years ago and both have given generously of themselves in Committee positions over the years.
Dick Hooper, Secretary of the RBA, spoke about Barry and gave a history of Barrys (and the Walsh family's) life-long involvement with Raheny Post Office. Leo George Devitt, FORR, spoke of Seamuss arrival in Raheny (originally from Rahanna in Co. Carlow) some 40 years ago and the wonderful relationship of Seamus with the residents of Raheny especially St. Annes - over the years. Many thanks to Leo for displaying photos of years gone by in Raheny. They brought back lots of memories.
Jackie Cheevers, Chairperson of the RBA presented both Barry and Seamus with a lovely framed 1945 picture of the village.
Almost 100 people attended the heavily-subscribed party, including family members and friends. Pat Cronin and Humphrey Kelleher, former bank managers in Raheny and active Committee members, came back for the occasion.
It was a lovely evening in beautiful surroundings and we would like to thank St. Annes Catering Staff for their excellent cuisine and professional service.
Good luck and happy retirement to the Grocer and the Postmaster Youll be a hard act to follow!

Pat Crimmins,
RBA Co-Ordinator.

26-08-05 (update from Feb. story re. world record)
Guinness world record holders for continuous singles tennis, Ciaran Gilchrist from Raheny and Karl Falsey, visited Galway earlier this month to offer a 4 hour 5 set match to Mike Geraghty and Francis Power, seeking to regain the world record for doubles tennis (they played for 36 hours, against 18 different partnerships, mostly in two-hour stints).
Messrs Gilchrist and Falsley sent their paperwork and video material to the Guinness world records team over the summer, following their smashing of the world record in February, as reported on RTE, TV3 and in the papers:
* Irish tennis players set new world record for the longest competitive singles match.*
31-year-old Ciaran Gilchrist, from Raheny in Dublin, and 19-year-old Karl Falsey, from Athboy in Meath, played for over 30 hours, breaking the previous record of 25 hours and 25 minutes, while raising money for the Asian tsunami relief fund.
Winner Ciaran Gilchrist thanked all for great support for the attempt at Westwood, Clontarf from Friday 11th to Saturday 12th February - over 3,000 was raised.
10-05-05 Donation received towards Tidy Towns suggestion (March, updated May)
The Association was delighted to receive a boost for its ongoing work, with the Tidy Village Committee and the City Council, to improve Raheny. A builder, formerly of the area and now living southside, wrote in having seen the results and commentary from the Tidy Towns Competition. In additon to congratulations on the achievements, he sent a monetary contribution towards the idea of setting up a map of the area, for example on the plaza, with practical suggestions (etched metal under perspex) and the idea that people might sponsor a street or feature, such as St. Anne's Park, Bull Island or one of the rivers. The RBA is most grateful and looks forward to the map becoming a reality in due course. Further contributions and suggestions would be most welcome.

30-12-04 An Bord Pleanala rejects Council application on multiple grounds (update)
To the relief of many in, from and otherwise connected with Raheny and Clontarf, the Planning Appeals Board has decisively rejected the Dublin City Council application to establish a Waste Facility in St. Anne's Park, the City's second-largest regular park, and the leading municipal leisure facility, as well as home to the Arboretum. Details include:
APPLICATION by Dublin City Council for approval under section 175 of the Planning and Development Act, 2000 in accordance with plans and particulars, including an environmental impact statement, lodged with the Board on the 28th June, 2004.
Requested development: A green-waste-shredding operation in a purpose-designed building, to be constructed on site, as well as the acceptance and storage, pending transfer off-site for biological treatment, of green waste, a civic amenity recycling facility for the acceptance, segregation, repackaging and storage, pending collection for submission to recovery/disposal activities of dry recyclable materials and bulky household waste.
Grounds:
1. With regard to the nature and scale of the proposed waste management installation and to the location within St. Anne's Park, which has a zoning objective "to preserve, provide and improve recreational amenity and open space," it is considered that the proposed development would have significant adverse impacts and detract from the recreational and visual amenities of St. Annes Park, which is a public park of major significance in Dublin City, and it would contravene materially the current Dublin City Development Plan.
The zoning objective as set out in the development plan is considered to be reasonable and appropriate. The proposed development would therefore be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
2. The EU Directive on Environmental Impact Assessment (85/337/EEC, as amended by Council Directive 97/11/EC) requires an outline of the main alternatives studied and an indication of the main reasons for the choice, taking into account the environmental effects.
Having regard to the nature and scale of the proposed development, which is envisaged as a regional waste management facility, and its location within a major urban public park, it is considered that the environmental impact statement does not adequately address the issue of the suitability of the proposed location having regard to possible alternative locations.
3. The proposed waste disposal facility would generate a significant volume of traffic within the park and on the road network in the vicinity including significant volumes of truck movements. The proposed development due to traffic movements would constitute a serious threat to public safety within this park, would detract from the amenities of the area and would, therefore, be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
14-12-04 All members and staff welcome; do come along (updated)
RBA Christmas Drinks for members and their staff takes place on Tuesday, 14th December, from 6 until 8 (or late) in the Cedars Lounge, St. Assam's Park, upstairs.
Please come along and have a good time!
23-11-04 Artist and member Breide Smyth donates all proceeds
Once again local artist Breide P. Smyth (At Home Creche) has produced a set of fine Christmas cards, being sold by volunteers and from the Creche, with all proceeds going directly to the Dublin Simon Community. Keep an eye out for the cards in the area, or call by At Home on Station Road, just past the DART station.
21-11-04 Three trees removed replaced by three saplings (updated)
As mentioned here and elsewhere, the removal of three mature trees, including two very well-established specimens (probably older than most of the area's houses), from Maywood Road some months back sparked considerable concern locally, and there were questions as to why they were taken out. The avenue, with double rows of tress each side, is a popular feature. However, the City Council has now replanted, with three fine saplings to be seen in the same general area (one is further in from the road than its predecessor). Thanks are due, and it is to be hoped that the new trees will be left to grow in peace, adding further to Raheny's greenery.
(21/11) The Raheny News reports that the trees are chestnuts, this should be in harmony with many like trees on the road.
21-11-04 Mention in papers, second busiest in city
Raheny Library, always a popular and supportive local resource, and centre for much good work, serving people for many miles around, is once again one of the busiest libraries in all Dublin, with more than fifteen thousand active borrowers, second only to the Central Library (ILAC). Despite sometimes tough parking, Donaghmede was also very busy, as was Coolock.
Our Library has also been the centre of construction work for some weeks. Aside from the adjacent roadworks, there has been internal work on the paved areas, now substantially covered by smooth tarmac, and some interior work on the back room space.
In addition to the quality delivery of services and wide-ranging stock, the library team continue to provide wonderful exhibitions also.

29-10-04 Decision due by December 16th
Three days of oral hearing with regard to the proposal for a waste facility within St. Anne's Park came to an end yesterday (Thursday), with closing arguments for and against a grant of permission. Arguments against included the inappropriateness and bad precedent of placing such a development within a park, the availability of more suitable places, the health issues from emissions, and the traffic and littering implications. The City Council argued that while the lands in question were part of the park, they had not been available to the public, who would actually gain some open space, that such facilities are necessary and that the proposal only allowed for limited activities.
The proposal has been brought by the appointed City Manager, using Executive powers granted by a recent Act, so there is no recourse to the City Council members (who voted against it). The Inspector chairing the oral hearing will make a recommendation to the Board, who will make the final decision. This can be appealed to the Irish Courts only on a point of law.

10-10-04 City Council release bilingual listing of many names
(8/10, updated 10/10)
Dublin City Council, with support from Government placenames specialists, has prepared and released a new volume of Dublin City Street Names, which can be viewed online at www.dublincity.ie; it joins the previous online Dublin street names source (a voluntary effort) at www.iol.ie/~sob/sraid/
The new volume is neatly presented, with translations from English to Irish and vice versa, and should be helpful to both businesses and individuals.
Some Irish forms suggested in the new volume differ from current practice (Bettyglen moves from Gleann Bheithe to just Bettyglen, and Maywood, currently Choill Bhealtaine, to just Maywood) but most are familiar.

Tidy Towns Competition 2004
Adjudication Report
Centre: Raheny (Ref. 552)
County: Dublin
Category: E
Date of adjudication: 2nd July 2004
Mark: 216 (of 300; details at end)
Overall Developmental Approach:
The committee is thanked for their entry and background information for this years Tidy Towns competition. It is noted that this is Year 2 of the 3 Year Plan - it would be beneficial for the adjudication day to have the full plan. This also helps monitor yearly progress. The completion of the new bridges over the Santry river is a great achievement. The committee and the council are to be congratulated. It is also encouraging to note that the committee has grown.
The Built Environment:
Once again, the Library, the Post Office, the Station House pub and the Churches were all presented to a very high standard. There was improvement on the presentation of the cottages at the Crescent. The exterior of the Dart station could be made more attractive. The shops are well presented but some areas would benefit from some painting. The completion of the re-facing of the railway bridge will further enhance the area. Sign posting for the new bridges over the Santry river should be considered.
Landscaping:
Raheny does well in this part of the competition. The standard of landscaping is very good, particularly in St. Annes. The co-operation and assistance of Dublin City Council is evident and of the highest standard. Businesses should be encouraged to complement this work by adding further hanging baskets and planting in the village area.
Wildlife and Natural Amenities:
The committee are to be commended for their approach in appointing an environmental consultant. Details of the role of this position and how it impacts on Raheny Tidy Towns and community environment should accompany next years application.
Litter Control:
The additional volunteers that have joined the committee to address litter have been effective and Raheny was almost totally litter free on the day of adjudication. Some bins seemed full and ready to overflow. It is important that this is monitored. You are to be commended for your efforts in such a busy village area. Events such as the An Taisce Spring Clean can help generate better community awareness of the area. Consider running projects in conjunction with local schools to further this awareness.
Tidiness:
There is an overall impression of tidiness and a cared-for area in Raheny. However, to gain further marks in this section, attention to details is important. Removal of weeds from the base of walls, tress, kerbs, fresh painting of walls, etc., add considerably to the overall tidiness.
Residential Areas:
The standard of presentation of most residential areas in Raheny is very high. There were many well-kept, attractive, colourful residential gardens of particular note in Maywood, St. Assams and along the Howth Road. The Crescent was litter free on adjudication day, however it could be further developed to become a real village gem. Again, attention to detail in some areas such as kerbs, base of trees and walls would further enhance the area.
Roads, Streets and Back Areas:
As Raheny is in a built-up area, the Raheny signs work well and give a welcome village feel to the area. Work on the roads, streets and back areas has been maintained and Raheny scores well in this section. The committee are to be commended for their work on this. Consideration could be given to erecting a map in the village which would indicate the local amenities including St. Annes, the sea front, etc.
General Impression:
Raheny gives an impression of a welcoming, cared-for urban village. It has a lot of traffic, and is a busy village, yet it, through good presentation of its residential areas, and good litter control, has done well in the competition. Clearly, there is good co-operation with the committee, the council, local business and residents, which should be maintained, and this will further Rahenys success into the future.

On the reverse of the display stand, the previous exhibition continues, with extremely interesting notes on transport, and a feature on the Dublin-Howth milestones, two of which stand in Raheny. The happy outcome of all this is that Mr. Con Clarke of Maywood has accepted the appointment as Co-ordinator of the Raheny Tidy Village Committee. He is retired from Aer Lingus and is a keen follower of sport being a former Chairman of Dublin Co. Board and a member of St.Vincents G.A.A. Club.

Senior status in hurling, football and camogie is maintained and at present in excess of 35 teams are catered for - particularly underage teams. They also have a very successful Ladies Football team. The present Club Chairman is Declan Gahan.
The G.A.A.s neighbour, Raheny United, which was founded in 1994 following an amalgamation of Raheny Boys and Dunseedy United, opened their new Clubhouse in All Saints Drive during the year. The Chairperson is Billy Ward. They have 26 teams including girls and womens teams. The senior team plays in the Premier A.U.L. Division. There is also a successful over-35 team. Highlights of the past season were the winning of a number of All-Ireland titles in Girls football - the Under 16 All Ireland Title and the Leinster Title. The Under 16, Under14, Under 12 and Under 10 won the Dublin League and Leinster League and Cups. Well done to all.

Improvements
During the past year a range of improvements to the village took place. The Lord Mayor of Dublin performed the opening ceremony of the revamped car park at the rear of Supervalu and customers can park free of charge for up to 2 hours. They can also recycle their bottles and tin cans as the bottle banks are back again in this car park. For their customers added convenience, Supervalu now has an ATM located in their store.
A year on, we can report that traffic flow through our village has much improved since the introduction of Pay and Display parking. There are still problems in the mornings when students are being dropped to schools in the village. There is a tailback of traffic from the bottom of Main Street through the junction of the Howth Road and Station Road and this is partly caused by the new traffic lights at the Pedestrian Crossing at the end of Main Street. The clamping personnel have been seen in the village as early as 7.30 a.m. so be warned!
Many people will have seen the Dublin City Council working on improving the bridge over the River Santry. This work was the culmination of many years of negotiation and spearheaded by the Chairperson of the Tidy Village Committee, Ann Sheeran. Work is now completed and many thanks are due to all involved for a job well done. The RBA were happy to be associated by making a contribution of 5000 towards the cost. It is envisaged that the banks of the river on both sides of the road will be landscaped in time.
22-11-03 and Members' Christmas Event
The Members' Christmas Event will follow the Switching on of the Christmas Tree Lights this year... all on Tuesday, 9th December.
We look forward to seeing all there.
06-10-03 Neighbours launch new site (update)
The RBA was represented at the launch of the new Chamber site last week, attended by around twenty guests and featuring a guest speaker and details of the new site, which even features music! We wish Clontarf the very best with their new online home.
05-10-03 (update - detailed results)
Raheny scored a very creditable 213 out of a theoretical maximum mark of 300 this year, up from 206/300 last year; we look forward to support from all in doing even better next year.
Announcments will be made soon re. the campaign for 2004 and the supporting appointment.
Raheny, Dublin, Category E; judging early July 2003, notes - Tidy Village Group:
Overall Developmental Approach- 36/50 (2002: 35/50)
We are glad to see your development plan progressing so well. Your associations with the local community and businesses, and Dublin City Council, help to focus your committee on proposed works and also to involve the community in the spirit of the Tidy Towns initiative.
The Built Environment- 27/40 (2002: 27/40)
The Station House Pub, both churches, the Spar and the post office were all quite impressive on the day of adjudication. Posters announcing a new car park in the shopping centre detracted from the overall appearance of the centre. The front of cottages opposite the train station could do with a tidy up. There were quite a few weeds in evidence and the whole area had an uncared-for look. Raheny fares well in this area of the competition.
Landscaping- 29/40 (2002: 28/40)
The landscaping throughout Raheny is quite good; your work over the past number of years is starting to show results. The many flower beds planted throughout the village added a very welcome splash of colour. The grounds of St. Anne's Park are also quite impressive, along with some of the planting in residential areas.
Wildlife and Natural Amenities- 16/30 (2002: 16/30)
St. Anne's Park was very well presented on the day of adjudication and is a wonderful amenity for the community. Keep up the good work. It is good to see your participation in the Ireland Winter Garden Bird Count, it might be an idea to include more details of events such as these in future adjudications.
Litter Control- 28/40 (2002: 26/40)
Your awareness and attempts to prevent the gathering of litter were noted and seem to have successfully paid off as very little rubbish was to be seen on Raheny streets on the day of adjudication. Your committee's initiative to have weekly clean-ups in the village and your co-operation with the City Council's cleansing department have shown very good results this year.
Tidiness- 15/20 (2002: 14/20)
Raheny had a much-cared for appearance on the day of adjudication. There appears to be much attention paid to this aspect of the competition throughout the whole of Raheny. The area to the side of the train station could do with freshening-up and your consultation with Iarnrod Eireann was noted.
Residential Areas- 25/30 (2002: 24/30)
There are some lovely houses to be seen around the Raheny area and overall, they were presented very well. Of particular mention were Rathmore Park, Maywood and Avondale Park. The houses in all estates and roads were presented to a very good standard.
Roads, Streets and Back Areas- 29/40 (2002: 28/40)
All areas in this section were extremely good, he entrances to Raheny are extremely well cared-for, kerbsides on the approach roads into Raheny and throughout the village were generally free of weeds and litter and the back areas and side streets were also extremely well-presented. Keep up the good work!
General Impression- 8/10 (2002: 8/10)
Your Tidy Towns Committee have taken very positive steps in all aspects of the competition and I am confident that the committee will successfully bring your three-year plan to completion. Your work in association with Dublin City Council, the local community, businesses and associations helps to bring some wonderful results and demonstrates the benefit of these associations in a community like Raheny.

16-06-03 Are you a "Proud of Raheny" resident? (update)
Do YOU want to make a difference?
Raheny Tidy Village Group and the Raheny Business Association are seeking a community-conscious individual to head-up the Raheny Tidy Village Group.
The candidate must be enthusiastic and committed to encouraging, organising, liasing with government officials, groups and businesses, and individual volunteers in the Raheny area, and maximising local involvement in the Tidy Towns Competition.
The candidate will be expected to research, devise and implement a Tidy Towns strategy, helping Raheny select, meet and even exceed objectives to achieve greater environmental, community and social development, for the Tidy Towns competition over the next three years.
09-06-03 Temp. traffic measures begin
03-06-03 Santry River to have new look soon (update)
In an update to last week's story, the news on the bridge is now even better. Last week, a letter from Dublin City Council made known that funding was now available (following less positive news in October 2002 and March) for the planned and hoped-for Santry Bridge redesign.
Now it appears that the Bridge Project, which received positive feedback when displayed in the Library, and which will improve the adjacent areas of Raheny's main waterway, is all set to start. The latest word is that the City Manager has approved the final form of the development and appointed a contractor to start work this month.
All in Raheny will look forward to the new, more open and modern look of the bridge on the main road through the village, and hopefully to the new look it will give the river, which has so much potential as it passes through the heart of our locality.
03-06-03 Have you booked your team (and/ or hole) ?
See Events for details.
04-05-03 Monday May 12th, 7-9 p.m.
St. Paul's College, Secondary School for Boys, will hold an Open Evening on Monday 12th, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; senior primary pupils from the area, with their parents, are invited.
04-05-03 Coffee morning, May 6th from 10 a.m. (updated)
The residents and staff invite you to join them for a fund-raising coffee morning on Tuesday May 6th, from 10 a.m. to noon. This forms part of the Home's Bealtaine Festival, the 8th annual such event, celebrating creativity in later years.
04-05-03 Annual meetings continue (update)
The next Residents' Association to meet will be Foxfield Residents' Association, whose A.G.. takes place at 8.30 p.m. in the Shieling Hotel. Attendance much appreciated.
Last week saw the A.G.M. of neighbouring St. Assam's and District Residents' Association (SADRA), in old St. Assam's (St. Joseph's Youth Club), at 8.30 p.m.
The previous week, the Federation of Raheny Residents, revived last year, held its A.G.M. in the Cedar Lounge. While not announced in the Green Paper, the meeting was attended by members of four Residents' Associations (Foxfield, St. Assam's and District, St. Anne's and Ennafort-Cill Eanna). The officers for 2003-2004 are: Chairman (Rose Daly), Secretary (not elected), Treasurer (Michael Gaffney) and P.R.O. (Leo "George" Davitt).
Raheny continues to have a range of Residents' Associations, while some areas, such as Maywood, old Bettyglen and Avondale, the village centre and much of the Howth Road, have not had representative groups for many years. Current groups include:
- St. Anne's Residents' Association
- St. Assam's and District Residents' Association
- Foxfield Residents' Association
- Ennafort-Cill Eanna Residents' Association
- Ashcroft Residents' Association
- Belmont Residents' Association
04-05-03 Dedicated team joined by volunteers (update)
Despite "April showers" type weather, Saturday April 26th saw the dedicated volunteers of the Tidy Village Group turn out at the Library for the Spring Clean Day. They were joined at 10 and 11 a.m. by a small number of helpers, the youngest in their early teens.
Sterling work was done but given the long notice of the event, the support of local groups, and the broader context of An Tasice's national Spring Clean event and the village's aims in the Tidy Towns competition, the attendance was a disappointment. This has also been reflected in single-digit attendances at recent village and area Tidy Village meetings. This is a cause which most citizens would support but it may be that some assume that large numbers are already involved...
So, please keep an eye out for the next event and if you can, do come along and lend your support.
18-04-03 Enjoyment for all - see you there (2nd update)
This year's Golf Classic will take place in Clontarf Golf Club (Donnycarney House, Malahide Road) on Friday 4th July. Please put the date in your diaries - it'll be a great day out as ever, and a grand way to raise funds for your Association.
Watch the site, including the Newsletter section, for more (copy enrolment form will be available).
18-04-03 Good news on co-operation but disappointment re. bridge project
Dublin City Council remains keen to work with local interests to improve the village and, for example, a recent meeting between the Executive Manager for the area, Mr. Declan Wallace, and the local Senior Engineer, Ms. Celine Reilly, and the Association, was very positive, with discussions including the continuing challenge of traffic.
Unfortunately, the much-hoped-for Bridge Project has run into a sticky patch. Despite being fully planned, and well past the original start date, the renovation of the main village bridge has now been put on hold by the City Council, due to economic pressures. The Association will continue to seek the earliest possible date for the resumption of this project.
18-04-03 Good review for the recent new production
The Rose Bowl has received an excellent review from the Raheny News - well done to all who attended and supported.

08-04-03 Support websites and Raheny News
Key to the feeling of community is the availability of news about the area. Today, people are increasingly keen to see material on the Internet, where they can reach it at all times, at home, in the library or a cybercafe or in work, but paper is important too, and we shall soon be sending out the RBA Newsletter for this period.
The Association is delighted to receive news for the website and encourages all members to keep their mail coming. In addition, the general website at raheny.com takes news. It is important too to keep the news flowing to the Green Paper - the Raheny News, which the Association keenly supports, is a local treasure and we can all help by sending in material for it.
Other sources of news can include city papers, and church and voluntary group (sporting, community, charitable, cultural) bulletins and websites; suggestions for good sources about Raheny are always welcome.
04-04-03 North Dublin champions!

The whole school joined in the celebration, with early release. A party followed for those involved, yesterday.
A special word of thanks was said to Hockey Teacher, Ms. Stephanie Phillips and the dedicated long-serving Coach, Mr. Des Ryan.

04-04-03 Tidy Village Committee and RBA launch (updated)
The Tidy Village Committee and R.B.A. are organising a big Spring Clean-Up on Saturday, 26th April 2003 from the village centre around 11 a.m. - we hope to see you there! Let's make Raheny a place to be even more proud of...
04-04-03 Library hosts fellow City Council facility
After months of searching, Raheny has left off its distinction of being the only major area in its region of Dublin to lack a dedicated recycling facility. Following the commencement of work at Supervalu, the facility there had to close and finding a new home was proving difficult. However, a range of City Council recycling repositories have now settled in the Library grounds and are accompanied by the relocated Enable (formerly Cerebral Palsy Ireland) clothing receptacle.
This is a most welcome development and it is hoped that users will respect the facility and its surroundings.
04-04-03 Unit being fitted-out at Hilltop Shopping Centre More to come on this welcome development . . .
23-03-03 David King at the Hallward Gallery (update)
Initial offering sells out!!
Local artist David King, winner last year of the €10,000 RHA Hennessy Craig scholarship and focus of a special Irish Independent Weekend Magazine article last month, is currently exhibiting at the Hallward Gallery, Merrion Square. The exhibition has been so popular and successful that all paintings originally offered for sale have been acquired (since just March 12th).
David is a former member of the association as a practitioner of website design, with some fine sites to his firm's credit. He has had a long interest in art and has learnt from fellow local artist Brian McCarthy, as well as studying at NCAD (he has since also taken a Masters). Eventually he decided that he needed to focus on his art and now he works six days a week at his Broadstone studio.
David, who married last year, is enjoying wide recognition and has sold to Dublin City Council, Dermot Desmond, the Office of Public Works, First Active and more; Ib Jorgensen recently noted him as an artist worth investing in.
We expect to hear much more of Mr. King in the coming years and wish himself, his wife and family the very best.
23-03-03 Manor House and St. Paul's score at ALSAA (updated/ StP) At the Kit Kat Irish Schools National Finals for Cross-Country, under the aegis of the Irish Schools' Athletic Association, held at the A.L.S.A.A. grounds near Dublin Airport (2nd week of March 2003):
* Manor House's Senior Athletics team came first and are now the All-Ireland Champions. The team members were C. Hooper, F. McGreevy, T. Giblin, C. Woods, L. McKeown, A. Ryan, E. Henry and C. McMcGreevy.
* St. Paul's College also had a win at Senior level and are now All-Ireland Champions.
22-01-03 Good turnout of members hoped for!
We look forward to seeing all members of the Association represented at the AGM - have you got your invitation ?
The Association invites all members, or their representatives, to the 15th A.G.M., at 6 p.m. in the Cedar Lounge, St. Assam's Park (back room, downstairs).
The Association needs more Committee members so if you would be interested at all, do consider letting your name go forward, or putting it forward on the night.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
22-01-03 One of the area's great annual events returns for '03
One of Ireland's great athletic events runs again, promoted, as ever, by Raheny Shamrock Athletic Club. All are welcome to join in on Sunday 26th January. This year's nominated charity St. Francis Hospice.
The walk starts at 2.30 p.m. and the main race at 3 p.m. For boys and girls between 10 and 15, there is a one mile road race and fun run, starting at 2.30 p.m.

The race was first held on January 29th, 1985, with a field of over 800 runners. It has grown in stature since and is now one of Ireland's top races and the leading 5 mile road race. Athletes come from all over Ireland, north and south, and beyond, and are always most welcome. The biggest turnout was for the Dublin Millennium, with 1,500 runners, and the fastest time was 22 minutes 39 seconds (1987), the fastest time ever run by an Irishman over 5 miles.
Last year, TV3 sent cameras to record the day and they featured the first Raheny man to win the Raheny 5, Mark Kenneally.
12-01-03 Christmas season definitively over!
Today marked the last stage for the Association's much-admired lighted Tree, which was stepped-down after Ephiphany and has now been removed for recycling. The workmen did a very thorough job, removing the fine specimen in stages and with minimum disruption to pedestrians and traffic.

05-01-03 Thanks to all for support in 2002!! The Raheny Business Association wishes to thank all, especially the people of Raheny, for their support in 2002, hopes it has been a good Christmas and wishes the very best for 2003!!
We look forward to seeing and hearing from you across the New Year.
05-01-03 17th December an enjoyable evening (update) A wide range of members and their staff, and a number of friends of the Association, attended the annual Christmas event, which was warmly accomodated by the GAA and well catered for in terms of both food and music. While the staff of the GAA were on their own Christmas night, volunteers were available to support the RBA evening. In addition to food, a glass or two of wine and the music, all attendees were entered into the evening's draw, with a good selection of prizes. All agreed the evening was an enjoyable success.
Special thanks are due to Tommy Lawrence and the Mayo Trio (George, Pat and Cecil) for the music, Eilish for the food and Raheny GAA for their fine hospitality.
09-12-02 Great time had by all!
The Raheny Business Association (R. B. A.) hosted the Annual Switching On of the Christmas Tree Lights ceremony, which took place on Friday evening at 6p.m. in the village centre.
The evening started with Christmas Carols being played over the P.A. system and then the M.C., Chris Lennon, took over and encouraged the crowd to sing along with him and they were accompanied by Tommy Laurence on the trumpet.
Then the Chairman of the Association, Mr. Pat Cronin, Manager of the A.I.B., Raheny, invited the Rev. Jim Carroll and Fr. Tom Kearney, P.P., to bless the Christmas Tree. After the blessing of the Tree, the countdown for the Switch On commenced and the lights were switched on by the Lady Mayoress, Eileen Quinn.
Shortly afterwards and, slightly late due to traffic congestion, Santa arrived in a Nissan Jeep to the tumultuous cheers of the crowd. He led the children to the Youth Club where he listened to their requests and handed out presents. In the Youth Club disco music was provided by the well known D.J., Ger Lawlor, courtesy of Eamon Purcell of the Cedars.
The R.B.A. would like to thank everybody involved. First of all our excellent M.C., Chris Lennon who kept everything running smoothly, the Rev. Jim and Fr. Tom for the spiritual contribution, the Lady Mayoress, Isobelle Crosson and the Youth Club Management Team, the Parks Dept. of Dublin City Council for providing the lovely Christmas Tree, Willie O’Neill and Pat McMahon for putting the lights on the Tree, Bettyglen Electric who connected the lights, Owen Devitt for providing the P.A. system, members of the F.O.R.R. for stewarding, Seamus Griffith of Superthrift, the local Gardai who kept a watchful eye on everything, the D.J., Ger lawlor, Trumpet Player Tom Laurence, Santa for dropping by and last but not least, all the people who came to watch including all the children. Thanks to you all for a great evening.

18-11-02 Enjoyable evening also covered in local newspapers
We present a selection of images from the highly successful launch evening, attended by around 90 of the local community...
The Chairman, Mr. Pat Cronin, gives the introductory talk, outlining the Association's history, activities and aims.
He is followed by local man Mr. Joe Doyle, promoter and developer of local website (e.g. www.raheny.com), who designed and built the site and who talks about the Internet and communities, the potential for websites for business and the power, flexibility and needs (especially for all members to contribute news and keep their entries current) of the RBA website.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr. Dermot Lacey, makes his speech, thanking the Association for the invitation, complimenting the organisation and attendance of the evening and praising the work of the many community and voluntary bodies who sustain their areas and contribute so much to the life of Dublin City, as well as commenting on the development of the Internet as a part of modern life.
The Lord Mayor, watched-over by Mr. Doyle, launches www.rahenybusiness.com (also available at business.raheny.com and rba.raheny.com) live online; when he presses the RETURN key, it can be seen worldwide, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Chairman, Mr. Pat Cronin, having made his closing remarks and expressed thanks to all who have helped bring this evening to pass, makes a presentation of some fine wines (courtesy of Callaghan Vintage Wines) to the Lord Mayor as a token of appreciation.
With the formal business of the evening over, the Chairman thanks all who have come and invites everyone to enjoy the range of food and drinks available. In the aftermath, the local public representatives gather with the site's developer.
From left to right, Cllr. Tommy Broughan, T.D. (Labour), Cllr. Senator Liam Fitzgerald (Fianna Fail), Cllr. Richard Bruton, T.D. (Fine Gael), Cllr. Dermot Lacey, Lord Mayor (Labour), Mr. J.W. Doyle, community website developer, Cllr. Sean Kenny (Labour).
13-11-02 On sale in the Church of Our Lady Mother of Divine Grace
In addition to the fine cards in aid of Dublin Simon (see previous story), long-running local charitable group the Raheny Missionary Project is now selling packs of 4 quality cards from the Divine Word Missions for €1 at the church (after weekday Masses and in the Parish Book Centre).
13-11-02 Local institution still going strong...
Raheny's much-loved "Raheny News", the Green Paper, published issue 750 on Sunday 10th November 2002. This amazing local resource was founded by a team working with Fr. Con O'Keefe and journalist Liam Flynn and is the only survivor of the Raheny Comunity Council.
Best wishes to all the volunteers, past and present, involved, and here's looking to the 1,000th issue!
13-11-02 Cedar Lounge, Thursday 14th November, 8 p.m. The Raheny Tidy Village Group, whose aims the RBA supports keenly, appeals to residents and all interested parties to attend the meeting to discuss and exchange ideas about development of the area for all the people.
They note that in other parts of the country, where for example Tidy Town Groups are working, there is great popular involvement and we need that in Raheny and its hinterland also.
12-11-02 Cards available at "Home from Home" Creche on Station Road
Local artist Breide Smyth has launched her second annual Christmas Card Appeal to aid the homeless of Dublin. This is a non-profit venture and all proceeds go directly to Simon.
A series of four card designs are sold in packets of 16 at a cost of €10 and these quality cards can be purchased at Home from Home Creche, Station Road (9-5 daily and 11.30-1.30 on Sundays).
Last year’s appeal raised €6,692 for Dublin Simon and with your help, even more can be gathered this year.
Thanks: Parish Newsletter. Pictures to follow.
06-11-02 Large attendance for talk, and the launch by the Lord Mayor
Mr. Pat Cronin, Manager of A.I.B. Raheny and current Chairperson of the Raheny Business Association (R.B.A.), welcomed ther large attendance to the launch of the Association’s new website - www.rahenybusiness.com - on Wednesday 30th October 2002, in the Grange Woodbine Club, Raheny Road. Among the audience, led by the Lord Mayor, were local politicians Minister of State Ivor Callely (F.F.), Richard Bruton, T.D. (F.G.), Tommy Broughan, T.D. (Lab.), Sen. Liam Fitzgerald (F.F.), Cllr. Sean Kenny, (Lab.) After a brief history of the Association and some key local projects, Pat invited Mr. Joe Doyle of Maywood and raheny.com, who designed the site for the R.B.A., to make a presentation around the facility, which, combining a directory offering every member a substantial webpage of their own pages for news and other matters which can be maintained by the Assoication itself, is unique in Ireland at this time.
This Joe did extremely well, so much so that even people who weren’t very familiar with websites and/ or computers understood what was going on and what being on the web would mean for businesses in the future. He said there are up to one hundred members listed on the web site which include the trades, financial institutions, shops (from supermarkets to garden centres), service outlets and professionals, schools and sports organisations. People world wide can now log on at any time and find out about Raheny and its environs, the wide range of businesses in the area, tourism, amenities, accessibility etc.
Joe also demonstrated how easy it is to input news, for example, and update member details and stressed that sites which constantly update and which are easy to access are the ones which will be visited most often.
Joe then invited the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr. Dermot Lacey (Labour) to officially launch the web site - www.rahenybusiness.com. Dermot said he was delighted to be back in Raheny again as, although he is a ‘Southsider’, he was no stranger to the village. As a former boy scout he spent many happy times in the Raheny and St. Anne’s Park areas and he recognised some familiar faces in the audience.
He complimented the Business Association on their web site and said it was a powerful tool for promoting the businesses and the Raheny area and, judging by the numbers present at the launch, there was a lot of interest in the site. He then ‘logged on’ and officially launched the site on the World Wide Web electronically (see story of 30/10).
Among the many community leaders, friends and members of the R. B. A. present on the night were Fr. Tom Kearney, P.P., Ann Sheeran, Chairperson of the Raheny Tidy Village Committee and colleagues, Rose Daly, Chairperson of the Federation of Raheny Residents and her husband Paddy, and Phil Verdon and Greg Brough, Raheny G. A. A.
The R. B. A. wish to thank Grange Woodbine Club for the use of their excellent premises and in particular Niall Harkin and Bernard Wynn for their help, and Nuala Stynes for providing the food. Thanks also to Stephen Jordan, Principal of Ard Scoil La Salle for the loan of the Audio Visual Equipment and to Leo G. Devitt for several of the photos used on the web site.
